Grades 3–5: teaching CT with no computer lab

The framework asks for fifty unplugged hours inside Mathematics. Here is what a period looks like, and why no devices is the design rather than a compromise.

A school without a computer lab is not behind on this curriculum. For Grades 3 to 5, a lab is not part of it.

Unplugged is the design, not a fallback

Fifty hours a year, taught inside Mathematics and other subjects, with no requirement for devices. That is the specification for the primary band, not a reduced version for under-resourced schools, but what the framework asks of every school.

It follows from the subject's own logic. If computational thinking is a structured way of taking a problem apart, then a nine-year-old learns it by taking problems apart, on paper, out loud, with the class. A screen at that age adds an interface between the child and the reasoning.

While AI is an important requirement, CT is a broader skill, developing a foundation for learning.

The handbooks sit beside Maths, not instead of it

Twelve official handbooks were released, a teacher book and a student book for each grade from 3 to 8. The circular is precise about their status:

These resource books are not designed as textbooks, but rather as a companion to the NCERT Mathematics textbooks… intended to be used alongside regular classroom teaching.

A companion. So the CT worksheet on decomposition belongs in the week the class is already breaking numbers apart, not in a separate slot on a Thursday that has nothing to do with what they did on Wednesday.

What a period looks like

The framework specifies a three-phase shape, and the same shape holds whether the lesson is plugged or unplugged:

The three phases as named in the framework. Treat the minutes as the shape of a period rather than a stopwatch.

The weight sits in the middle phase, and that is the point. The circular puts the teacher's role plainly:

What the skills look like with no device

  • Decomposition: planning a class event, working out what has to happen, in what order, and who does each part.
  • Pattern Recognition: number sequences, but also the rhythm of a poem or the shape of a week’s timetable.
  • Abstraction: drawing a map of the route to school and deciding what to leave off it.
  • Algorithm Design: writing instructions precise enough that another child can follow them without asking a question.
  • Data Analysis: a tally of how the class travels to school, then reading what it says.
  • Troubleshooting: a set of instructions that goes wrong on purpose, and finding the step at fault.

None of that needs a lab. Most of it needs a well-posed problem and enough silence for children to struggle with it productively.

The record matters more than the mark

There is no board mark for this band. Progress is recorded as skill levels aligned to PARAKH, plus a portfolio of the child's work, which means the evidence accumulates lesson by lesson, and cannot be produced retrospectively.
